Geometries
Recent works by Christopher McNulty and Andy Gilmore

Rochester Contemporary Art Center: October 1 - November 14, 2010

Rochester Contemporary Art Center is pleased to announce the opening of its Fall electronic media exhibition, Geometries, October 1 @ 6pm. Celebrate First Fridays (firstfridayrochester.org) with a stunning visual display by Alabama-based artist Christopher McNulty and Rochester talent, Andy Gilmore. A profound media exhibition, Geometries will move you to think.

Geometries combines philosophy, theory, and practice in a ‘visually pleasing’ duality. The works of Christopher McNulty and Andy Gilmore meet to shed light on the hidden beauty behind geometry, thought, time, and ultimately, the zen of creative production. In his recent pieces, Christopher McNulty focuses on the way in which the human mind copes with the nature of our surrounding environment. McNulty documents his journey through physical, emotional, and intellectual realms with aborious, repetitive actions. Several of the resulting artworks are intricate pencil-and-paper drawings that serve as a physical record of the artist’s remaining days on earth. The works reference death, but pursue perfection with each mark.

In his born-digital prints, Andy Gilmore concerns himself with formal structures, design and tone. Heavily influenced by his musical interests, Gilmore conveys the visual intricacy inherent in his experience of sound. Gilmore’s works are prismatic and use their structural qualities to express the mathematical cadence of a good song or concerto. Looking at his various works, one can see how the smooth, circular lines and the vivid coloration lend themselves to a sonorous fantasy. Both artists toy with subtle distinctions in structure, while using simple, reducible forms and integrated parts in order to convey a larger whole. While they seem to contrast in stylistic and practical terms—most noticeably Gilmore’s colorful method of computer illustration and McNulty’s monochromatic hand sketching and cutting—the artworks in Geometries combine to create a deeply meditative exhibition.
