Rochester, NY (June 10, 2011) - Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) announces a new
art exhibition inspired by The Inner Loop. RoCo’s 2011 State of the City exhibition, In The Loop will take Rochester’s unmistakable, often maligned, and nearly 50-year-old ring highway The Inner Loop as a departure point. The artists in the exhibition will employ diverse methods such as traditional landscape painting, photo documentation, interactive video, and psychogeography & mixed-media sculpture to consider and discuss Downtown Rochester’s urban highway and Launched in 2008, State of the City exhibitions bring together artists from various backgrounds and disciplines who document and explore Upstate, NY Cities. This series of exhibitions features local, emerging, established and international artists. State of the City exhibitions engage the public and creative professionals in considering and envisioning the history and future of upstate cities. This vital series of exhibitions will continue to generate important discussions across the art community and foster productive collaborations between artists, cultural institutions, urban planning/architecture professionals and the general public in Upstate/Western NY.
In The Loop features engaging new artworks and projects including: urban landscape paintings by Jim Mott (Rochester, “the itinerant artist project”), an interactive photography installation by Cary Markerink (Netherlands), interactive video installation by Mark Edward Grimm, a history and context of The Inner Loop as told by The Landmark Society of Western New York, and a mixed media installation by artist collaborative Bartow+Metzgar with James Downer & Greg Stewart (Watkins Glen, Oswego, Rochester) Rochester Contemporary Art Center Director Bleu Cease says, “The Inner Loop is often discussed and its future is uncertain, yet we don’t often ask artists to tell us what they think of such a feature or topic. The Artists and projects in In The Loop will help us to think differently about an important part of Rochester’s urban landscape and history, and this is precisely the goal of the State of the City series of exhibitions at RoCo.” The In The Loop opening reception (August 5, 6-10pm) kicks off “Transitions-Rochester” (Aug. 5 - Nov. 13, 2011) a multi-venue collaboration organized by George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo), and Visual Studies Workshop. Events and programs that span the fall will include exhibition opening receptions, artists’ talks, informal panels, open houses, and opportunities for people of all backgrounds to share their visions of what Rochester could be.
