About the Artist

Robert E. Marx
1925 – 2020

Robert Ernst Marx was born in 1925 in Northeim, Germany, before his family moved to the United States two years later. He studied at the University of Illinois where he achieved his BFA in painting (1951) as well as his MFA in print-making (1953). During his early career as an artist, he studied and traveled in Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France.

Marx’s practice focused primarily on oil painting but extended into drawing, print-making, bronze-cast sculpture, and midcentury etchings, commonly touching upon religious and social issues and their connection to power dynamics.

Marx was an important and influential figure in Rochester’s art scene for generations. He was also a major part of Rochester Contemporary Art Center, where he participated in many Members Exhibitions and was highlighted in Makers & Mentors 2012 alongside former students Ron Pokrasso (Santa Fe, NM), and David Bumbeck (Middlebury, VT). He was represented by Main Street Arts Gallery in Clifton Springs, NY beginning in 2014, and had previously been represented by Davidson Galleries in Seattle, WA, starting in 1970. Marx’s work is featured in international collections including, but not limited to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Hirschhorn Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art.

RoCo’s Davis-Havens Sales Gallery offers artworks of all styles at a range of prices, all to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Hundreds of artworks, which have been donated by collectors (and some artists), are rotated on view regularly. Artworks have been given expressly for this ongoing fundraiser so prices are often significantly discounted. All proceeds from the sale of these artworks support the long term future of RoCo.
Our Future Fund Featured Find is a new initiative highlighting a different artwork and artist each month.
