Heather Willems: "The Midnight Disease"
Gallery at Hobart & William Smith College, Geneva, NY
Heather Willems work utilizes the writing process, through the repetition of a single phrase or the task of free writing to fill room sized scrolls. The process becomes ingrained in the visual image; that of an obsessive writer, writing to quell an unconscious melancholy. Willem's piece, Writing the Making consists of two 40 foot by 9 foot scrolls crossing the gallery space and a collection of recent drawings

Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 7:00 - 9:00 p.m

Film: "The Cranes are Flying"
Dryden Theatre, George Eastman House

The Cranes are Flying (LETYAT ZHURAVLI), Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov, USSR, 1957, 94 min., In Russian with English subtitles, 35mm.

The heartbreaking winner of the 1958 Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or returns to the big screen! Boris and Veronica are two devoted lovers in Moscow who are separated when Boris goes off to fight in World War II. Desperately lonely, Veronica finds it hard to resist when Boris's cousin begins to make romantic overtures. Not surprisingly from the director of I Am Cuba, Kalotozov's classic has been heralded for its striking cinematography, and the powerful images help the story resonate on almost every emotional level. A masterpiece not to be missed, especially in the new 35mm print that will be screened.
