About the Artists
Karla Slack was born and raised in Mexico City and is committed to introducing the culture of Central America to others. From an early age, dance was a passion. Her dancing has taken her throughout the Mexican territories, Cuba, Belgium, Spain, Guatemala and the Basque country. Wanting to preserve and share the traditions of both dance and music, she founded a performance group in Mexico. With her relocation later to Rochester, NY., Alma de Mexico was created to share these same cultural components. Karla’s 25 years of teaching has involved her in many projects. These include: Casa de la Cultura en Ecatepec, Diplomado en la Secretaria de Educacion de Chiapas, and other dance school programs in Mexico. Today she teaches Zumba and is the Director of the music group, Alma de Mexico. It is their goal to preserve the “Soul of Mexico'' in Rochester, NY.
Chloe Cheatle is a Fine Arts student at RIT. Majoring in Sculpture and minoring in Museum Studies, she hopes to pursue a career in Object Conservation. She is a mixed-media artist with interests in Art History, textiles, metalwork, and printmaking. She would describe her work as experimental, exploring themes of perception, growth and self identity, as well as practical investigation of materials and processes. Chloe appreciates the opportunity to expand her Teaching Artistry practice, fostering environments where participants can freely express themselves and engage in a nurturing space for artistic growth.
About Teaching Artists ROC
Based in Western and Central NY, Teaching Artists ROC was formed in 2017. Earlier that year, another teaching artist organization in Rochester shut its doors, creating a void within the local education system and after-school programming for arts enrichment and curriculum support. Many teaching artists on that roster were eager to continue providing quality programming that they had developed and used with great success. With that in mind, Teaching Artists ROC has a new vision, goals and fresh structure to better serve the Rochester community for decades to come.
Teaching Artists ROC is steadily moving in new directions and taking on new challenges, while still honoring the spirit and importance of arts integration in education. We are now reaching out to other artists, venues and events to develop into a more diverse organization. Who we are, what we provide, and where we are performing expands with every new day. This is done with the skills and creativity that’s just naturally part of being a teaching artist. https://teachingartistsroc.com/
