About the Artist

Peter Max (b. 1937) is an awarded illustrator and painter, best known for his vibrant colors and influence on the pop art scene in the US. Max studied anatomy, figure drawing, and composition under Frank J. Reilly at the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan. Throughout his decades-long career, Max created vibrant counter-cultural posters expressing themes of love, peace, and unity. A few notable moments of his career include 1969, when he was featured on the cover of Life Magazine, being commissioned by the United States Postal Service to create a 10 cent stamp celebrating the World’s Fair in 1974, and in 1990, when he was given a section of the Berlin Wall to paint, symbolizing the freedom and reunification of Germany.

Timeline Dega Man features one of Max’s characters, the “Dega Man.” This figure is a paradox of his work as a whole: flamboyant, striking, yet intangible simultaneously. The “Dega Man” emerged from Max’s drawings sometime in the 1980s, but was a character in his paintings throughout the 1990s as well.

RoCo’s Davis-Havens Sales Gallery offers artworks of all styles at a range of prices, all to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Hundreds of artworks, which have been donated by collectors (and some artists), are rotated on view regularly. Artworks have been given expressly for this ongoing fundraiser so prices are often significantly discounted. All proceeds from the sale of these artworks support the long term future of RoCo.
Our Future Fund Featured Find is a new initiative highlighting a different artwork and artist each month.
