About the Artist

Thomas Seawell (1936-2015), was a renowned printmaker and art educator. He received degrees in Fine Art from Washington University (St. Louis) and Texas Christian University (Fort Worth.) Seawell was an educator at SUNY Oswego from 1963 until he retired in 1992. While at Oswego, Seawell began the printmaking program for their Department of Fine Arts, and was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. As well as being an incredible teacher, Seawell was one of the earliest artists to practice collagraphy, popularizing the medium for other printmakers across the USA. Past students remember him for his passion for printmaking, and incredible sense of humor.

Thomas Seawell designed The Second Coaches for Patron Members of the Memorial Art Gallery, as an award to entrants in the Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition, 1972. This print is edition 141/200. Seawell also exhibited in many museums internationally, including the Library of Congress, the British Museum of London, the California Legion of Honor, and the Smithsonian Institution. Much of his artwork is archived in the Artist Printmaker Research Collection at the Museum of Texas Tech University.
