About the Artist

Veloy Vigil (1931-1997) was a painter, sculptor, and printmaker from Taos, New Mexico. Born in Denver, Colorado to a farming family, Vigil developed a passion for art in his youth. After twenty-seven years working in various other fields – including serving in Korea in the Marine Corp – and raising a family with his wife Elena, he decided to pursue art full time. Vigil has exhibited at many venues, including Clarkson University, 203 Fine Art, The Hubbard Museum of the American West, Larsen Gallery, Windsor Betts, and has been awarded the Winslow Homer Award for his watercolor work. Vigil and his wife also opened two galleries together, including The Elena Gallery in 1981 in Taos, New Mexico.

Vigil was Pueblo, and this impacted his artwork greatly. He is credited with having a “profound impact on Native American art,” because of the skill and modernity of his pieces, challenging assumptions people make about what indigenous art is. His artworks reference elements of Pueblo culture, such as deer dancers and spirit dancers, as well as depicting the general American Southwest.

RoCo’s Davis-Havens Sales Gallery offers artworks of all styles at a range of prices, all to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Hundreds of artworks, which have been donated by collectors (and some artists), are rotated on view regularly. Artworks have been given expressly for this ongoing fundraiser so prices are often significantly discounted. All proceeds from the sale of these artworks support the long term future of RoCo.
Our Future Fund Featured Find is a new initiative highlighting a different artwork and artist each month.
