Lift/Left is an installation by Deborah Jack using video, sound, text, and still images to present a central visual of a body moving through space and sea. The basis for the work is the myth of the flying Africans, enslaved persons who would not accept slavery and jumped off the decks of slave ships; they believed their souls would fly back to Africa and once again be free. Through evoking a sense of weightlessness, the installation is designed to relate to the experience of flight and the release from trauma.
