Under Pressure 2016

September 2, 2016 - September 25, 2016

Under Pressure: Redefining the Multiple is the first in a new series of collaborations between Rochester Contemporary Art Center and the Print Club of Rochester. Including national, regional, and international artists, this exhibition reflects the ongoing efforts of PCR to recognize a paradigm shift in how prints are considered and the expansion of the definition of print media. Under Pressure 2016 includes a wide range of works that transcend traditional approaches and move beyond two dimensions.

About the Artists

Ellen Heck hold a BFA in Printmaking and Painting from the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as a BA in Philosophy from Brown University. Heck is a two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, which aids growing artists and students in furthering their training during their early years of artistry. She has exhibited in over ten different states, and internationally. She currently has works in the Wally Workman Gallery, Groveland Gallery, Davidson Galleries, and the Kala Art Institute, where she was an Artist-in-Residence from 2009-2014. Heck currently resides in North Carolina.

Jenny Robinson (San Francisco, CA) moved from London to San Francisco, where she now resides and receives most of her inspiration for her industrial prints. Robinson earned her BA in Fine Art Print Making from West Surrey College of Art and Design in England, and since then has gone on to exhibit in galleries such as Davidson Galleries, Warnock Fine Arts, and the Kala Art Institute. In addition to teaching printmaking in schools all over the Bay Area, including San Francisco Center for the Book, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and California State University, Chico, Robinson has also been an Artist-in-Residence at the Kala Art Institute and the Hartford School of Art.

April Vollmer (New York, New York) works almost exclusively in Japanese woodblock. Her work has taken her all the way to Japan, where she participated in Nagasawa Art Park Program. Vollmer has exhibited nationally and internationally at AIR Gallery, Islip Art Museum, and Kentler International Drawing Space. Her work has been published widely including at the Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop, Mid American Print Council Journal, and Art in Print, among many others. Vollmer also teaches classes and lectures.

Heather Swenson works and lives in Rochester, NY, where she had a solo exhibition in 2013. She earned her BFA in Painting and Drawing, as well as in Printmaking, from the State University of New York at Purchase. Swenson has traveled back to Purchase where she has exhibited, in addition to exhibiting at other locations in downstate and upstate New York. It is also not uncommon to find Swenson lecturing in Binghamton, or in her home town of Rochester.
