About the Artist

Carl Charenza
1935 –

Carl Chiarenza grew up in Rochester and holds degrees including an A.A.S. and a B.F.A. from Rochester Institute of Technology, a M.S. and A.M. from Boston University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1973. He was the first person in the US to receive a Ph.D. in the History of Photography, and has been an important figure in the Boston, New York, and Rochester art communities for over sixty years.

Chiarenza works predominantly in abstract, black and white photography. His idiosyncratic use of unlikely subject matter and development of an unique visual language have made his work especially recognizable and collectable.

Chiarenza’s work has been shown in exhibitions around the world, including solo exhibitions at the High Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Fine Arts, the George Eastman Museum, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the International Center of Photography, among others. His work is represented in the collections of over 50 museums including the Getty Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliotheque Nationale (France), and the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (Japan).

Chiarenza has exhibited at RoCo in many Members Exhibitions, and was highlighted in 2014 alongside three of his former students in Makers & Mentors 2014.

RoCo’s Davis-Havens Sales Gallery offers artworks of all styles at a range of prices, all to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Hundreds of artworks, which have been donated by collectors (and some artists), are rotated on view regularly. Artworks have been given expressly for this ongoing fundraiser so prices are often significantly discounted. All proceeds from the sale of these artworks support the long term future of RoCo.
Our Future Fund Featured Find is a new initiative highlighting a different artwork and artist each month.
