About the Artist

George Wegman was born in Rochester, NY, second in a family of eleven children. Rochester has been his home throughout almost all of his life. He is the father to two creative sons, and is a grandfather. George worked as a carpenter and craftsman for forty years. He retired from St. John’s Home in 2011 after serving the elder community there for 26 years.

For the last 55 years, George has been a practicing artist. He believes that talent alone does not make an artist, an artist. There is no substitute for diligent and persistent work if one is to evolve and develop. Art, being the ‘signature of man’, enriches life and has the potential to heal this broken and divided world. These are lessons that he learned as a young artist while serving as the graduate assistant to Fred Meyer in the MFA program at Rochester Institute of Technology. Throughout his career, George has has many mentors including: Peter Monacelli, Jacque and Tarrant Clements, Lawrence Williams, Chuck Haas, Kurt Feuerherm, Bob Conge, and Joe Hendrick. These individuals have served him as teachers, supportive friends, and prolific artists.

George is a longtime member of RoCo. He has exhibited in several Members Exhibitions, and the 2019 group exhibition Landscapes and The Unbuilt.

RoCo’s Davis-Havens Sales Gallery offers artworks of all styles at a range of prices, all to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Hundreds of artworks, which have been donated by collectors (and some artists), are rotated on view regularly. Artworks have been given expressly for this ongoing fundraiser so prices are often significantly discounted. All proceeds from the sale of these artworks support the long term future of RoCo.
Our Future Fund Featured Find is a new initiative highlighting a different artwork and artist each month.
